KIND-hearted youngsters at a
Mildenhall primary school have raised £100 to replace money
stolen from a Poppy Appeal box in the town.
Inspired by an article in the
Journal, pupils at Great Heath Primary
School collected the cash to replace money taken from a
collection box at Mildenhall Library.
Thieves stole the cash from
the box at the Chesnut Close library, along with money from
a collection tin for the RSPB, between 11.30 pm and 11.55 pm
on Saturday, November 5.
“The pupils read the article
and decided that they wanted to do something about the
missing money as they felt angry about the situation,” said
Reg Barker, teaching assistant at the school.
“The reaction to this was
unbelievable. They could not believe that someone could do
this to soldiers who have done so much for the country.”
Following a discussion after a PE lesson, it was decided by
the youngsters that they would hand over money collected
from their after-school sports club to replace the money
taken from the tin.

Picking
up the cheque on Monday at the St John’s Close school was
Colin Plowright and Sally Brenton from the Mildenhall branch
of the Royal British Legion.
“The reaction
to this was unbelievable. They could not believe that
someone could do this to soldiers who have done so much for
the country.”
“The youngsters at the school really have hearts of gold. I
felt really humbled to receive the money from them on behalf
of the branch.
“It’s unbelievable how they reacted to this. They really
are stars.”
Last month pupils from Great Heath joined fellow students
from Mildenhall College of Technology, Riverside Middle
School and St Mary’s Church of England Academy for a
Remembrance Day service in the town on Friday, November 11.
“This year children in the
town really got behind the campaign. We just hope this can
continue for years to come,” added Mr Plowright |
